The Real Me

The “Real Me”. Obviously, I’m a golf pro, so there will surely be some golf stuff here. But mostly this space is for short stories, poems, trip reports, recipes and other assorted randoms. Mainly inspired by the outdoors and the joy of movement; and dedicated to the preservation and promotion of mental health.

Gray Day at Lake O’Hara – Nov 24/21

Fucking bulk food bins, you know those ones where you put your bag around the chute and lift a lever to release the goods? There’s always one goddam peanut or a broken M&M piece wedged in the works so the chute won’t fully open and nothing comes out. So you give ‘er a lil jiggle…

Up the irons! This ski would probably have not happened if it weren’t for Iron Maiden. My partner had bailed out last minute but I was like fuck it, I’m still going. In my mind, though, i was a little off. It was cold and my motivation was questionable. Off i went anyway, aiming for…

Moraine Lake Road

First real ski of the year. Cloudy with flurries all day, not so great for the scenic views. Low snowfall so far means acceptable risk level in proceeding through the avalanche terrain to get all the way to the lake. Latest snow/rain/sleet event might change that.

Exploratory Venture in PLPP

Not quite the start we had to ski season last year, but things are starting to shape up. Headed for the “back door” access to Pocaterra with minimal expectations and a “just nice to be outside” mindset. About an hour later, I was enjoying the view at the Kananaskis Fire Lookout. Expectations far exceeded with…

Around Spray Lake

Pleasant fall riding until the blizzard started at the absolute most distant point from the car. Had to be snowing at 2,3 cm per hour at the highest point on Mt. Shark Rd. same at Mt. Engadine. El barfo de nieve. I sure wasn’t looking forward to 20k of slowmo slipping and slogging in that…

The Ghost

It had been several years since I had last ventured out into the Ghost River Valley. There are some places and scenes that burn themselves into your mind, never to be forgotten. For me, this is one of those places. It was pretty much as I remembered it being 20+ years ago. My intent for…

Goat Cr./Goat Pond via Legacy Trail

Out and back the long way around cuz Smith-Dorrien is closed. Weird to roll up to an empty goat creek parking lot. Mixed surfaces, head winds, flurries & sleet. Good, hard ride, solid effort, pats self on back.

Lake Louise

Seven and a half hours of riding and I saw less than 10 other riders. One black bear who took absolutely no notice of me. Some exquisite thigh cramps around the 130k mark, but they magically subsided with a bit of stretching, weird. Also crows can fly pretty fast.

Lake O’Hara

I guess ski season is never really over if you can find snow to ski on. There was plenty for this spring outing, which was semi-sunny, warm and completely people-less. There were pretty clear (fresh) bear tracks near the end of the trail, making for a bit of a goosebumpy trip.

Highwood Pass 4/20 ski

Maybe it’s not over yet. Or maybe it is now? When plans to hit the slopes fell victim to faulty logistics, I adjusted plan. While the 420 crowd was painting their toenails and eating cheetos in the valley bottom, I went for the natural high straight up hwy 40 to the summit of HW Pass.…

Life-changing Shoes?

Life-changing shoes? Maybe. When I bought them, I weighed somewhere in the neighborhood of 280 pounds. This morning, I weighed in at 216.6. That’s over 60 pounds of me, gone. Actually, I’ve been as high as 305 over the past few years. Pant size: 44. If we use that as a starting point, that’s over…

The Loppet

Been a while since I’ve indulged my writing hobby so here’s a story I’m going to call “The Loppet”. A long short story, if I may. This story could begin and end in so many different places. In our new covid world, the physical start/finish line is just a nondescript placement of two small orange…
