Highwood Pass 4/20 ski

Maybe it’s not over yet. Or maybe it is now? When plans to hit the slopes fell victim to faulty logistics, I adjusted plan. While the 420 crowd was painting their toenails and eating cheetos in the valley bottom, I went for the natural high straight up hwy 40 to the summit of HW Pass. The route passes thru avalanche terrain, each party must assess for themselves their level of risk tolerance. I saw that the major avalanche paths along the road had already released, leaving little snow to slide, so this fell well within mine. Hard, but gratifying in the end.

The inbound leg featured some isothermic sinkage, lots of sticking and intense hunger due to underfueling. I was badly underprepared for the intense sun, much albredo. I was eating handfuls of snow to trick my stomach into thinking it was getting food and was actually in a pretty bad place over the last few kilometres. Nausea, shaky and weak. Luckily sugar was just a 15-minute drive away. I must have looked pretty rough when I went in cuz I was still kind of out of it – but my homing instincts brought me directly to the chocolate milk and the Mike & Ike, it’s like they were calling to me, a beacon in the fog. Definitely plan to repeat this trip with better preps.
